1960s J.D. Moveis e Decoracoes Brazilian Rosewood & Leather Sofa

Eight foot long sofa in beautifully figured Jacaranda wood with a series of skeletal fins along the back connected with an aluminium rod, and cognac leather cushions. A visually impressive design made in Sao Paulo, Brazil, circa 1965. A rare item on the market by J.D. Moveis e Decoracoes, this skeletal design is often misattributed to Zalszupin. The sofa frame itself measures 96 inches in length; with the cushion overhang, the overall length is 102 inches.
This rare sofa was created utilising a similar technology as Eames with Herman Miller in bending wood to create unique and intriguing designs. The Jacaranda Rosewood frames use this bentwood methodology along with an extraordinary skeleton style slatted back, creating something completely unique and never-seen before. This bone style design is similar and in contrast to designs by Carlo Hauner and Martin Eisler which were from the same era and locale. And if you ask us, these chairs possess the best parts of both Hauner & Eisler”s style of design, plus Zalszupin”s. The combination of folded Jacaranda is similar to Zalszupin”s ”Petalas” table design alongside the wood slats of the ”Costela” chair by Hauner & Eisler. Four solid Brazilian Rosewood hexagonal shaped legs support the frame.
